Joey McGuire offered Wichita Falls Rider running back Anquan Willis a scholarship to Texas Tech by phone on Friday night, and the offer was caught on video.
Willis and Rider had just won their first playoff game, defeating Carrollton Creekview High School, 59-13, at home. He’s a member of the 2023 recruiting class.
After the victory, McGuire called him and, with the call on speaker, offered Willis a scholarship to play at Texas Tech. The video was posted by Jonathan Hull of the Wichita Falls Times-Record.
Most of the audio is hard to make out due to background noise. But, McGuire’s voice offering Willis a scholarship at the 24 second mark of the video is not, nor is Willis’ reaction and the reaction of his teammates.
On Saturday morning, Willis posted an acknowledgement of the scholarship offer. It is believed to be his first offer. His player page at 247Sports.com notes no scholarship offers and hasn’t been updated with the Tech offer.
Wills scored two touchdowns, rushed for 100 yards and had 82 yards receiving in the victory.
Texas Tech hired McGuire as its new head coach on Monday. Athletic director Kirby Hocutt noted that one of the primary drivers of hiring McGuire was his relationships with high school coaches and his ability to recruit in Texas. That has already paid off, as two Cedar Hill players committed to Texas Tech shortly after McGuire’s hiring. McGuire coached at Cedar Hill before joining Baylor as an assistant coach.
