Ochai Agbaji, who had two big games for the Kansas Jayhawks last week, was named the Big 12 Men’s Player of the Week on Monday.
Meanwhile, Oklahoma forward Tanner Groves, who transferred to the Sooners from Eastern Washington, was named the Big 12 Newcomer of the Week.
Agbaji turned heads at the Champions Classic last week with a career-high 29 points, one that had some NBA watchers believing that Agbaji could play himself into first-round draft status next June. Meanwhile, the Jayhawks went 2-0 for the week after beating Tarleton State at home on Friday, a game in which Agbaji had 25 points. His 54 points were the most for a Jayhawk in the Bill Self era in the first two games of a season.
Groves helped Oklahoma win two games last week under new head coach Porter Moser. In fact, the senior led the Sooners in both of those victories. He averaged 18 points per game, which left him tied for fourth in the Big 12 for the week. He also pulled down seven rebounds and shot 60 percent from the floor. Groves was one of just two players in the conference to shoot at least 25 shots and shoot 60 percent or better for the week.
