Ashley Joens Big 12 Women’s Basketball Player of the Week

NCAA Womens Basketball: Big 12 Conference Tournament-Texas vs Iowa State

Iowa State forward Ashley Joens was named the Big 12 Women’s Player of the Week after her huge week for the Cyclones.

In addition, Texas Tech guard Rhyle McKinney was named the Big 12 Freshman of the Week.

Joens, who is closing in on the all-time scoring record at Iowa State, led the Cyclones to a 3-0 week. She averaged 21.3 points and 7.3 rebounds in wins over Drake, South Dakota State and Southern. Against Drake, she posted a 31-point, 10-rebound performance. This is the 10th time that Joens has earned Women’s Player of the Week selection.

The Cyclones are spending Thanksgiving weekend in Estero Florida, the home of Florida Gulf Coast University, where they’re set to face Charlotte in the opening round of the Gulf Coast Showcase beginning Friday.

McKinney, an SMU transfer, averaged 17.5 points per game last week, leading the Lady Raiders with a career-high 21 points in their 62-44 win at Weber State. She then scored 14 points in the Lady Raiders’ 72-68 overtime win against Lamar, including the overtime basket that put Texas Tech up for good.

The Lady Raiders host Texas State on Monday night, and then travel to Katy, Texas, for the Van Chancellor Classic, where they’ll play Ball State, Old Dominion and New Mexico on Thanksgiving weekend.
