AP Top 25 Women: Baylor Stays Put, Texas Takes Dip in Rankings

The Baylor Bears stayed put and the Texas Longhorns took a bit of a dip in the AP Top 25 Women’s Basketball Top 25, released on Tuesday.

The release of this week’s poll was delayed for a day as No. 1 South Carolina and No. 2 UConn met in the Battle 4 Atlantis final on Monday night. South Carolina won the game, 73-57.

Four Big 12 teams appear in the Top 25 this week, including:

Baylor at No. 6;

Iowa State at No. 13;

Texas at No. 14;

And West Virginia at No. 22.

Baylor (3-1), which was No. 6 last week, lost its first game of the season on Sunday, albeit a three-point loss to No. 3 Maryland. The Bears are in Cancun, Mexico, for the Cancun Challenge this week. The Bears open with Fordham on Thanksgiving Day.

Texas (3-1), meanwhile, lost its own Top 25 game, falling to No. 16 Tennessee on Sunday. The Longhorns were No. 12 going into the game. This was a week after the Longhorns soared 13 spots after beating defending national champion Stanford. Texas hosts CSUN on Saturday.

Iowa State (4-0) kept rolling as it won all three of its games last week, and forward Ashley Joens was named Big 12 Player of the Week. The Cyclones are spending Thanksgiving weekend in Estero Florida, the home of Florida Gulf Coast University, where they’re set to face Charlotte in the opening round of the Gulf Coast Showcase beginning Friday.

West Virginia finally opened its season last Tuesday and won all three of its games, and in two of those games the Mountaineers forced 30 or more turnovers. West Virginia will face Purdue, and either Florida State or BYU, in the St. Pete Showcase beginning on Thursday in St. Petersburg, Florida.
