Baylor’s Jalon Pitre has been named a finalist for the 2021 Jim Thorpe Award, recognizing the top defensive back in college football.
Pitre joins Cincinnati’s Coby Bryant and Oregon’s Verone McKinley III as the finalists for the award. TCU’s Tre’von Moehrig won the award in 2020 and is now a safety for the Las Vegas Raiders.
Pitre ranks third nationally in fumble recoveries (3), ninth in TFL’s (15), and has recorded a TFL in 10 of the Bears’ last 11 games. He has also forced two fumbles and has two interceptions on the year. Pitre has been a swiss army knife for the Baylor Bears this season and is a big reason why the Bears are in the Big 12 title hunt one year after going 2-7. He plays with a tenacity unmatched by most and has been a catalyst for a much-improved Baylor defense.
The winner will be announced on December 9th at ESPN’s Home Depot College Football Awards Show. However, the official presentation of the award will take place in Oklahoma City on February 8, 2022.
Baylor hosts Texas Tech on Saturday and needs a win and an Oklahoma loss to play in the Big 12 Championship next weekend.
