Welcome to the HCS Big 12 mailbag! This mailbag is for all you football junkies out there who root for a Big 12 school that not only have questions about your team, but other teams in the conference as well. So, join me, grab your favorite drink, and relax as I answer all your Big 12 questions. For those interested, I will send out a tweet (@Derekduke25) every Monday until 8 PM CT for you to send in your questions to be answered every Tuesday right here at Heartland College Sports.
I want to thank each one of you who submitted a question this week and for those reading, I am glad you could join me. I am doing this on a Monday night and of course, it would not be a proper mailbag without a drink next to me. Tonight’s drink is Wild Turkey 101. Cheers!
@PetsandPucks asks: Was the fair catch interference call against Kansas State the worst call in the history of the Big 12?
Duke: Was it a bad call? Yes. Was it the worst call I have seen in the Big 12 this year? Not even close. There was a no call pass interference play earlier and then when you combine that with this kick interference call, it makes it even worse. I have seen plenty of bad officiating over the years and this year seems to have taken the cake as the worst year I can remember. I’ve said it before, but it doesn’t matter who you root for in this conference, at some point the bad officiating is going to rear its ugly head on your team. Unfortunately, Kansas State was the victim this past weekend.
@WvuDuke asks: Once Texas leaves, can the Big 12 still flag us for horns down?
Duke: I am surprised the Big 12 even cares about what other teams do to Texas anymore. In Bob Bowlsby’s eyes, Texas and Oklahoma are somebody else’s problem to deal with pretty soon here. Have you seen the new Big 12 commercials? Eight out of the ten teams get plenty of airtime and then you have Oklahoma and Texas getting a half second at the most. The Big 12 isn’t happy with Oklahoma or Texas and once they are gone, you can say or do whatever the hell you want.
@statefootbalfan asks: I have an absolutely horrible feeling that Oklahoma wins at Oklahoma State and then pulls off another win the following weekend. Please tell me I’m wrong.
Duke: At this time last week I would have agreed with your feeling that Oklahoma would win out. But things change over time, and I would have a hard time not picking the Cowboys to win on Saturday. Neither team has an offense that really scares you in the passing game and I believe this will be a throwback game because both teams will have a tough time scoring points. Oklahoma State is holding opponents to less than 15 points per game and is allowing less than 85 rushing yards per game. That’s unheard of in this day and age of college football. The Sooners have talent on offense, but they still are having some quarterback issues. Neither Spencer Rattler or Caleb Williams are playing well and Oklahoma State’s talent and experience will cause problems for the Sooners.
Of course, we have no idea about how Gundy will manage Bedlam but right now my gut is telling me Oklahoma State is the team that comes out on top. They have the better defense and have been the most consistent team in the Big 12. Plus, they are playing in Stillwater which should give them the slight edge. Give me Oklahoma State and Baylor for the Big 12 title game next weekend.
@angelhare asks: What song is on a continuous loop in the 5th ring of hell and why is it boomer sooner?
Duke: I don’t know if it would be boomer sooner. I really don’t have any issues with any Big 12 fight song, but I will say one year during Big 12 media days boomer sooner was playing for over five minutes straight and by that point I wanted some ear plugs. I would think that if there was any college football song playing on a loop in the fifth ring of hell it would be the Aggie War Hymn but maybe that’s just me. Sorry but I am not really into the whole cult thing.
@RPTexan asks: What are the odds that Oklahoma State wins out and gets dissed by the CFP committee? Happy Thanksgiving!
Duke: The committee made it clear that they don’t respect the Big 12 this year. Oklahoma State was ranked ninth last week and I have a tough time seeing them jump up a ton even if they beat Oklahoma this weekend. We should have a good reading on that after Tuesday night but in my opinion, the Cowboys belong up there if they can win out. There is no reason that two teams from the SEC are in the top four after the season is over. Also, happy Thanksgiving to you as well as all who are reading this. Don’t forget, wear your stretchy pants to make room for more food.
