Mike Boynton Jr. On Athletic’s 40-under-40 List

NCAA Basketball: Oklahoma State at Oklahoma

Mike Boynton Jr. was named as one of The Athletic’s ’40-under-40,’ a list of the most influential people in men’s college basketball, released on Tuesday.

Boynton was one of three people named to the list with Big 12 ties, along with two that have future ties to the conference. The Athletic’s Seth Davis put together the list.

Boynton is considered one of the game’s hottest coaching names, and he enters his fifth season at OSU. Davis points out that OSU elevated him to the job even though Boynton had no prior head-coaching experience. Boynton managed to sign, and keep, No. 1 overall recruit Cade Cunningham for the 2020-21 season, despite NCAA sanctions, and led the Cowboys to the NCAA Tournament during the appeal process.

The Cowboys are banned from the NCAA Tournament this year, but his tearful rebuke of the NCAA earned praise throughout college basketball.

Texas assistant coach Ulric Maligi made the list. He’s Texas head coach Chris Beard’s top lieutenant and followed Beard from Texas Tech to Texas. Maligi has also served as an assistant coach at UT Arlington, Stephen F. Austin, Houston, SMU and Texas A&M. A head-coaching job seems to be in his future.

Kelvin Smith, the Big 12’s Executive Associate Commissioner and General Counsel, made the list. Davis points out that Smith is in charge of media relationships and helped the league ink a deal with StatTracker for use by coaches and broadcasters during games.

Cincinnati head coach Wes Miller made the list. Miller took the job last offseason, but he led his previous team, UNC-Greensboro, to three Southern Conference championships and two NCAA Tournament appearances.

Houston assistant coach Kellen Sampson made the list. The top assistant to his father, Kelvin Sampson, the 36-year-old Sampson could be his father’s heir apparent or a head coach at another school at some point. The Cougars are a Top 25 program.
