Sonny Cumbie Returning as Texas Tech Offensive Coordinator

One of the most respected offensive minds in all of Texas will remain in Lubbock as the Offensive Coordinator under new head coach Joey McGuire. According to Chuck Carlton of Dallas Morning News, Sonny Cumbie, current interim coach at Texas Tech, will return in 2021 as the offensive coordinator:
This seems like an excellent retention by McGuire and should help keep some of the young talent in Lubbock on the roster, rather than cleaning house and having several players leave via the transfer portal.
Cumbie has been in the Red Raiders program as a player (2000-04), graduate assistant (2009-10), position coach (2011-13), coordinator (2021), and now interim head coach (present); it’s safe to say that Sonny Cumbie encapsulates a “Texas Tech Guy.” He is 1-2 as the interim coach, however, the four toughest games on the schedule remained after Matt Wells was fired.
The Red Raiders will close out the regular season against Baylor this weekend and then will wait to see where they are headed for their first bowl game since 2017 under Kliff Kingsbury.
