AP Top 25 Men: Iowa State Storms Into Top 25 Poll

NCAA Basketball: Iowa State at Texas Christian

The Iowa State Cyclones, undefeated and coming off an NIT Tip-off title, are No. 19 in the latest Associated Press Men’s Basketball Top 25, released on Monday.

The AP Top 25 included the following Big 12 teams:

No. 4 Baylor

No. 7 Kansas

No. 8 Texas

No. 19 Iowa State

Texas Tech received 34 votes in the poll.


Duke is now No. 1 overall after the Blue Devils beat last week’s No. 1, Gonzaga.

Iowa State (6-0) defeated two ranked teams to claim the NIT crown, beating No. 25 Xavier, 82-70, and No. 9 Memphis, 78-59. The Cyclones, coming off a two-win season in 2020-21, have a new head coach in T.J. Otzelberger and are in the AP Top 25 for the first time since the week of Feb. 19, 2019, when the Cyclones were No. 19. Iowa State hosts Arkansas-Pine Bluff on Wednesday and goes to Creighton on Saturday.

The Jayhawks (5-1) were No. 4 in last week’s poll. Kansas was at the ESPN Events Invitational in Orlando, Florida, last week. The Jayhawks opened with a 71-59 win over North Texas on Thanksgiving Day. Kansas followed that with a 74-73 loss to Dayton and a 96-83 win against Iona. Kansas is set to face St. John’s in Elmont, New York, in the Big 12-Big East Battle, which is the Jayhawks’ only game next week.  

The Baylor Bears (7-0) were No. 6 in last week’s poll. Baylor was at the Battle 4 Atlantis in Paradise Island, Bahamas, last week. The Bears started the tournament with a 75-63 win over Arizona State, followed by a 69-61 win over Virginia Commonwealth and a 75-58 win over Michigan State in the title game. The Bears are off until they host Arkansas Pine-Bluff on Saturday.

Texas (4-1) was No. 8 in last week’s poll. The Longhorns played just one game last week, the final game in the Abe Lemons Classic, named for the former Texas head coach. The Longhorns defeated Cal Baptist, 68-44, to sweep the Classic. Texas hosts Sam Houston on Monday in a students-only game at Gregory Gymnasium, followed by a home game at the Erwin Center against UT-Rio Grande Valley on Friday.

The entire poll featured No. 1 Duke, No. 2. Purdue, No. 3 Gonzaga, No. 4 Baylor, No. 5 UCLA, No. 6 Villanova, No. 7 Texas, No. 8 Kansas, No. 9 Kentucky, No. 10 Arkansas, No. 11 Arizona, No. 12 BYU, No. 13 Tennessee, No. 14 Florida, No. 15 Houston, No. 16 Alabama, No. 17 UConn, No. 18 Memphis, No. 19 Iowa State, No. 20 USC, No. 21 Auburn, No. 22 Michigan State, No. 23 Wisconsin, No. 24 Michigan and No. 25 Seton Hall.
