Baylor forward NaLyssa Smith was named the Big 12 Women’s Player of the Week after her huge week for the Bears at the Cancun Challenge.
In addition, Kansas State guard Serena Sundell was named the Big 12 Freshman of the Week.
Smith, the reigning Wade Trophy winner, helped the Bears win the Cancun Challenge by averaging 19.0 points, 15.3 rebounds and 1.3 blocks in the three games of the tournament. The Big 12 Preseason Player of the Year is one of two Big 12 players who is averaging at least 20 points and 10 rebounds per game this season. The other is Kansas State center Ayoka Lee. This is Smith’s fifth career weekly honor from the Big 12, and her fourth career Player of the Week selection.
Baylor is prepping for two games this week — a home game with Morehead State on Tuesday and a home game with Missouri on Saturday.
Sundell, a guard, averaged 14.5 points and 3.0 assists on 61.1 percent shooting last week to help the Wildcats defeat Abilene Christian and Northwestern State. She scored a career-high 25 points against ACU and dished out four assists against Northwestern State. Her 41 assists is fourth best among freshmen nationally. This is her first career Big 12 weekly honor.
The Wildcats host North Dakota State on Monday and then face No. 1 South Carolina on Friday.
