After Lincoln Riley shocked the world by leaving Oklahoma for USC, we thought the coaching carousel has reached its peak… Until Brian Kelly took the LSU job, leaving Notre Dame with a coaching vacancy after 12 years under Kelly’s leadership. Well, that job sits alongside the Sooners at the top of the list and it won’t be long before two new schools are left with vacancies to fill.
According to BetOnline.ag, those could likely be Cincinnati or Iowa State because Luke Fickell and Matt Campbell are near the top of the board to end up in South Bend. Fickell, who denies the speculation that he’s been targeted for the job, currently has 7/4 odds of being the next successor to Brian Kelly. Meanwhile, Matt Campbell, who has said in the past that he would only leave for two jobs (Ohio State, Notre Dame) is right behind Fickell at 4/1 odds.
Here is the complete list of odds for the Notre Dame job as of November 30th:
Current favorite is Notre Dame defensive coordinator Marcus Freeman, who started with the Irish this season and was the defensive coordinator and linebackers coach at Cincinnati from 2017-20. This will be a job to watch, and if the administration at Notre Dame decides to go with someone outside of the Freeman, it will cause yet another massive ripple in the college football coaching landscape.
