Sonny Cumbie Leaving Texas Tech for Head Coaching Job at Louisiana Tech

NCAA Football: Kansas State at Texas Tech

Red Raiders interim head coach and offensive coordinator will be the next head coach at Lousiana Tech, according to a report from FootballScoop.com. Skip Holtz, son of legendary coach Lou Holtz, was fired after nine seasons as the Bulldogs’ head coach on Friday and worked quickly to get Cumbie onboard.

Cumbie spent the 2021 season as the offensive coordinator in Lubbock under Matt Wells and was to be retained by new head coach Joey McGuire for the same duties going into 2022. This move comes as a bit of a surprise, given that Cumbie has been at Texas Tech or TCU since 2009 and seemed like a guy that would remain in Lubbock given all of his ties to the school as a player, analyst, and coach.

He must’ve gotten the itch to be the head honcho on the sidelines during his interim stint and Louisiana Tech gives him an opportunity to be just that. Cumbie was is 1-3 during his time as the interim coach at Texas Tech, but faced the top four teams in the Big 12 in a four-week stretch. The Red Raiders are bowl eligible and Cumbie was good enough to warrant interest elsewhere, so it’s safe to call this a successful season for everyone involved.

Texas Tech will wait and see where it’s headed in the postseason and several projections have them headed to the Guaranteed Rate Bowl in Phoenix, AZ. It has yet to be announced if he will remain with the team until the bowl game.
