Blake Shapen to Start for Gerry Bohanon at Big 12 Championship Game

Blake Shapen will start for Baylor in place of Gerry Bohanon in the Big 12 Championship game on Saturday, as the Bears made the change before kickoff.
Shapen, who started last week’s victory against Texas Tech, will make his second straight start in Bohanon’s place. Bohanon did take snaps during pre-game warmups.
Action Network’s Brett McMurphy was among the media members to report the news, which head coach Dave Aranda disclosed on College Gameday.
Bohanon had thrown for 2,160 yards, 17 touchdowns and six interceptions this season. He was Baylor’s starter from the beginning of the season until suffering an injury against Kansas State. Bohanon then sat for the Bears’ regular-season finale against Texas Tech last Saturday. The hope was that Bohanon would be able to start as they take their second shot at a Big 12 Championship game victory.
Instead, it will be Shapen who starts at quarterback for the second straight week. The freshman from Shreveport, Louisiana had seen limited action before taking the field in Bohanon’s place against K-State, where he threw for 137 yards. The following week, against Texas Tech, he was 20-of-34 passing for 254 yards, two touchdowns and one interceptions in the 27-24 win.
The Bears are trying to avenge their 24-14 loss to Oklahoma State on Oct. 2, one of two losses for the Bears this season. The other came against TCU on Nov. 6. Both of their losses have been away from home.
