The Oklahoma Sooners lost a 10-point halftime lead and fell to the Butler Bulldogs in overtime, 66-62, in the latest game of the Big 12-Big East Battle on Tuesday night.
With the victory, the Big East is now up 3-2 in the annual set of games between the two conferences.
Oklahoma led, 31-21, at halftime, but saw that lead erode in the second half, to the point where the Sooners needed a 3-pointer from Elijah Harkless with two seconds remaining to force overtime.
The Sooners had a chance to win in overtime, too. But Harkless missed a layup that would have given the Sooners a one-point lead with 12 seconds left. Then, after Butler’s Simas Lukosius made two free throws to put the Bulldogs up by three, Oklahoma’s Umoja Gibson missed a game-tying 3-pointer with five seconds left.
Harkless led the Sooners with 16 points, while Tanner Groves and Jordan Goldwire had 10 points each.
Also on Tuesday night, while not a Big 12-Big East Battle game, the Texas Tech Red Raiders (7-1) defeated the No. 13 Tennessee Volunteers, 57-52, in overtime in the Jimmy V Classic at Madison Square Garden. Terrence Shannon Jr. led the Red Raiders with 18 points and 12 rebounds. Kevin McCullar had eight points and 10 rebounds. Daniel Batcho had 11 rebounds off the bench. Kevin Obanor and Davion Warren each had 10 points.
There are two Big 12-Big East games on tap on Wednesday, as West Virginia hosts UConn and Kansas State hosts Marquette.
