The Cyclones got a big boost to their 2022 season on Friday, as their leading receiver, Xavier Hutchinson, announced that he would be returning to Ames next year.
This is a huge development for Matt Campbell and his 2022 team, as Hutchinson has been the closest thing to a deep threat that Iowa State has had in the previous two seasons. Hutchinson had a whopping 82 receptions in 2021, amassing 953 yards and five touchdowns.
The next wide receiver behind him was Tarique Milton, with 15 receptions and 278 yards on the year, and Milton is currently in the transfer portal. Of course, All-Big 12 tight end Charlie Kolar and All-American running back Breece Hall were second and third in receptions and yards respectively, but neither of them is expected to return next season.
That, plus Hutchinson’s upward trend over the past two seasons makes this an exciting announcement for Cyclone Nation.
Freshman quarterback Hunter Dekkers looks like the future signal-caller at Iowa State after Brock Purdy’s illustrious career as the Cyclones field commander comes to an end in the Cheeze-It Bowl against Clemson. He will be very happy to have a veteran target like Hutchinson to rely on as he grows into his new role in 2022.
Iowa State and No. 19 Clemson will clash in the Cheeze-It Bowl on December 29 in Orlando, Florida.
