Baylor’s NaLyssa Smith and Iowa State’s Ashley Joens are in the Top 10 of ESPN’s 2022 WNBA Mock Draft now that the WNBA Draft order is set.
The Washington Mystics took the No. 1 overall selection in the WNBA Draft, which was held on Sunday.
Smith, a Baylor forward, didn’t go No. 1 in that mock. That honor went to Kentucky forward Rhyne Howard. But Smith went No. 2 overall to the Indiana Fever.
Texas forward Charli Collier went No. 1 overall to the Dallas Wings in the 2021 WNBA Draft. So there’s still a chance that Smith could move up the order before next spring.
In fact, in the mock draft, Baylor head coach Nicki Collen was quoted as saying that she hoped that Smith would end up going No. 1. The former Atlanta Dream head coach said that Washington head coach Mike Thibault “… is a genius. He knows how to use versatile kids in multiple ways.”
Joens, one of the top players in the country, came into the mock draft at No. 9, which would put her with the Seattle Storm, which is an enviable landing spot. The Storm feature the legendary Sue Bird and former WNBA MVP Breanna Stewart.
Joens is chasing the Iowa State all-time scoring record this season.
The mock draft only included draft-eligible seniors.
