Baker Mayfield Praises Newest Oklahoma Recruit

Oklahoma QB Baker Mayfield

Baker Mayfield is the only player to win a Heisman Trophy after beginning his career as a walk-on, and he quite literally did that at Oklahoma. Shortly after Trevor Knight dismantled the Alabama Crimson Tide in the 2014 Allstate Sugar Bowl, a former Texas Tech walk-on quarterback arrived in Norman. Bob Stoops didn’t even know he was coming, but Mayfield enrolled at Oklahoma, joined the team as a walk-on quarterback, and the rest is history.

Well, on Tuesday, a four-star recruit named Jaren Kanak decided to take matters into his own hands just like Mayfield did. Kanak was committed to Clemson, as a scholarship player of course, and was set to play for Brent Venables there until Venables took the job at OU.

Afterward, Kanak went radio silent for a while, but there were rumors that he was going to follow Venables wherever he ended up, and he did just that. Even though his Twitter profile still says that he is committed to Clemson, Kanak is enrolled at Oklahoma and will play football for the Sooners next fall.

Kanak’s move caught the recruiting world on fire, and Baker Mayfield took notice of the young man’s resolve. After all, he did just show up on campus the week after Early Signing Day and enroll in classes. That definitely sounds like something Baker Mayfield would do.

Kanak’s addition to the Oklahoma 2022 recruiting class brings its total to 16 currently. There are a few more big names lurking out there for OU and they will certainly make a few more additions before February rolls around.

Oklahoma will face Oregon in the Valero Alamo Bowl on December 29th in San Antonio, Texas. The Sooners are currently favored by 4.5 points.
