Not that Bob Stoops needed anyone or anything to solidify his legacy with OU, but with the way the last few weeks have gone in Norman, he’s certainly done just that. And on Wednesday night in San Antonio, Texas for the Alamo Bowl, Sooners fans made sure he knew it.
Stoops took over the OU football program as the interim head coach after Lincoln Riley’s stunning departure for USC, which came one day after a loss in Bedlam to Oklahoma State. Bob Stoops stepped away from his job with FOX Sports to lead a program that desperately needed a calming influence to let the current players and recruits know that OU football was going to be OK. Stoops had also agreed to coach the team in the bowl game.
And with the rollercoaster of emotions OU fans have been on this season, they had their opportunity, en masse, to thank Bob Stoops. And the minute he walked on the field prior to the Alamo Bowl kicking off, the fans were there and exploded in cheers.
Even though the stadium wasn’t close to full at this point, and it wasn’t all OU fans, the roar is evident and this video will give you chills.
This is awesome and shows you just how grateful OU fans are for what Bob Stoops did to help stabilize the program in recent weeks. And someone who also should have been participating in that ovation is new head coach Brent Venables, who has already benefited from Stoops’ selflessness in returning to the program he helped revive over 20 years ago.
