Big 12 Has Two No. 1 Seeds in Latest ESPN Bracketology

NCAA Basketball: Missouri at Kansas

Both Baylor and Kansas are No. 1 seeds and the Big 12 had seven teams in the most recent NCAA Tournament Bracketology released by ESPN’s Joe Lunardi on Jan. 4.

Lunardi had eight Big Ten teams and seven Southeastern Conference teams in the draw, the only leagues with as many, or more, bids than the Big 12. The Big 12 just opened conference play on Jan. 1.

The Baylor Bears, the nation’s No. 1 team and undefeated after league wins over Iowa State and Oklahoma, remained the No. 1 overall seed. This time, the Bears would face either Southern or William & Mary in the first round in the South Region.

The Bears have the region to themselves, as far as the Big 12 is concerned. However, there are two future Big 12 members in the region — BYU and Houston.

Other takeaways:

Kansas moved up to a No. 1 seed. The Jayhawks were the only Big 12 team to move up in seeding since the last Bracketology.

Iowa State and West Virginia took a step down. The Cyclones were coming off their loss to Baylor, while West Virginia lost to Texas, with three Mountaineers were out of the game due to COVID-19 protocols.

Oklahoma, Texas and Texas Tech held steady at the same seed.

Oklahoma and Texas were in the same region and could face each other in the Elite Eight.

The West Region was loaded with three Big 12 teams, and the potential for a Sweet 16 matchup between Iowa State and West Virginia.

Along with the seven Big 12 teams, three future Big 12 teams were in the field — BYU, Houston and UCF. The Knights are in a First Four game.

An eighth Big 12 member, TCU, remained in the ‘next four out’ for the third straight week. The Horned Frogs have not played a conference game.
