Sean Ryan has become the fourth wideout from West Virginia to hit the transfer portal, following Sam Brown, Isaiah Esdale, and Winston Wright Jr.
Ryan, who initially played at Temple before transferring to West Virginia, has collected 81 receptions for 1,044 yards and four touchdowns in four seasons.
Ryan makes it 11 players to exit the Mountaineers program this season, hinting at possible issues within the locker room and/or coaches’ office. The team looked completely discombobulated in their bowl loss to Minnesota last week and showed it needs to improve offensively in a drastic way if WVU is to compete for the conference crown again.
Neal Brown will likely be coaching for his job in 2022, but this continuing mass exodus makes it difficult to believe that something might not happen before the season even gets here. Nonetheless, Brown is still at the helm, and timing, if nothing else, should keep his job safe until next season rolls around.
At the first sign of trouble in 2022, don’t be surprised if Brown gets the hook and the Mountaineers are looking for leadership elsewhere.
