Oklahoma got a big boost on Friday when veteran linebacker Deshaun White announced he would return for the 2022 season and play in Brent Venables’ defensive scheme.
White, a senior from North Richland Hills, Texas, recorded 61 tackles (third on the team), 5.0 TFLS, and a fumble recovery in 11 starts in 2021 and has appeared in 50 career games for the Sooners. In all, White has started 35 games for OU and will be one of the leaders of the new-look defense in Norman next season.
He made the announcement on Twitter Friday afternoon and simply put “unfinished business” above the graphic.
White’s return is a welcome sight to Venables’ staff and will be a piece the at Oklahoma can place young talent around. His experience at the college level will be vital for guys like Kobie McKinzie and Jaren Kanak to learn from and build on as their roles expand during a year where they could see a lot of action.
This is a huge win for the Sooners and will give White a chance to build his draft stock under Venables for a season before entering the 2023 Draft next spring.
