Gary Patterson Seen at Texas Basketball Game in Longhorns Gear

NCAA Football: Alamo Bowl-Stanford vs Texas Christian

Gary Patterson may in fact be inching closers towards joining the Texas Longhorns football staff, at least if Tuesday night was any indicition.

According to Brian Davis of the Austin American-Statesman, Patterson was in Austin at the Texas basketball game on Tuesday night against K-State, where he was sporting some Longhorns gear.

Here’s a photo of Patterson with AD Chris Del Conte.

This news comes less than two weeks after reports surfaced that Patterson had met with Texas about potentially joining the staff.

As has been previously reported, Patterson would not head to Texas to replace current defensive coordinator Pete Kwiatkowski. Instead, it’s more likely he would head to Austin in an administrative role on the defensive staff.  Kwiatkowski just wrapped up his first season after coming from Washington where he held the same position. The defensive coordinator still has two years and $1.7 million left on a three-year deal that he signed last spring.

Most recently as a head coach, Patterson struggled in his last few seasons with TCU, which led to the two sides parting ways on Halloween. Since then, the Horned Frogs hired Sonny Dykes from SMU to be their next head coach.

Patterson is still considered one of the top defensive minds in college football and if he wants to coach, he will undoubtedly find himself a home as quickly as he wants. But keeping Gary Patterson in the Big 12 would be an interesting proposition.

His ties to Texas also include athletic director Chris Del Conte, who was the athletic director at TCU prior to his move to the 40 acres.
