The TCU Horned Frogs scored a huge upset by defeating the No. 19 LSU Tigers 77-68, in the first game of the annual Big 12-SEC Challenge on Saturday.
The Horned Frogs (14-4, 3-3 in Big 12) won their second game over a ranked team in eight days, as they beat Iowa State on the road last Saturday. But beating LSU at Schollmaier Arena represented the Horned Frogs’ first win over a ranked LSU team since 1964.
TCU had a small lead at halftime, but they built a 50-34 lead in the first four minutes of the second half on the back of Chuck O’Bannon, who scored 11 of TCU’s first 12 points of the second half. That included three straight 3-pointers that led to an LSU time out.
O’Bannon finished with 19 points to share the team lead with Mike Miles. LSU cut into TCU’s lead at various times in the second half, but the Horned Frogs took control in the final four minutes of the game, as Miles scored eight straight points to help TCU push away.
Damion Baugh added 14 points for the Horned Frogs, who were coming off a 23-point home loss to Texas on Tuesday.
LSU had Damion Days back for the first time after an injury, and he scored 14 points and grabbed 12 rebounds. The same held for Tari Eason, who led LSU with 16 points, while Eric Gaines scored 14 points and Brandon Murray added 10 points. Xavier Pinson, who missed three weeks with a knee injury, played seven minutes and scored two points.
