James Akinjo One of 10 on Bob Cousy Award Watch List

NCAA Basketball: Alcorn State at Baylor

Baylor guard James Akinjo was the only Big 12 player to be named to the 10-player Bob Cousy Point Guard of the Year Award watch list on Monday.

The Cousy Award released its initial watch list in October, on which several Big 12 players were named. But the list is now down to 10 candidates, and Akinjo is on the list. He wasn’t on the initial 20-player watch list.

Akinjo, who formerly played for Arizona, leads the Big 12 in assists (5.7 per game), ranks second in steals (2.2 per game) and 11th in scoring (12.9 per game). He also ranks 17th nationally in assists (5.6 per game) and 16th nationally in steals (2.17 per game).

Baylor, which dropped to No. 9 in the AP Top 25 on Monday, is preparing to play West Virginia on Monday night. On Saturday, the Bears will travel to Lawrence, Kansas, to face the Kansas Jayhawks for the first time this season. The Bears are currently a game behind the Jayhawks in the Big 12 standings.

The Cousy Point Guard of the Year Award is named after the former Boston Celtics legend, who attended Holy Cross. The award recognizes the top point guards in Division I men’s college basketball.
