West Virginia 2022 Football Schedule Gets Shake Up With Two Thursday Night Games

NCAA Football: James Madison at West Virginia

The West Virginia Mountaineers 2022 football schedule got a shake up on Monday night.

The Mountaineers will have two of their games moved from Saturday kick offs to Thursday night kick offs.

The first is their highly-anticipated revival of the Backyard Brawl with Pittsburgh, which was scheduled for Saturday, September 3rd, but is now going to be played on Thursday, September 1st. Pitt will host the game in ESPN’s Thursday Night Opener at Heinz Field. The exact start time is still to be determined.

Then, their Week 4 game against Virginia Tech, also scheduled for a Saturday, on September 24th, will be moved to Thursday, September 22nd.

While we know the TV networks are the drivers here, you hate to see this for the fans who attend the games. College football is Saturday. Now fans will need to leave work early, get home late, drag themselves to the office on Friday to appease ESPN.

Such is the world of big-time college football, but none of us need to necessarily like it.

WVU finished the 2021 season with a loss to Minnesota in the Guaranteed Rate Bowl following a 6-6 regular season. With incumbent starter Jarret Doege hitting the transfer portal, the Mountaineers will have a new starter to open the 2022 season.

The Mountaineers have won three consecutive Backyard Brawls dating back to 2009, but trail the all-time series 41-60-3.
