Texas Tech Moves To No. 3 Seed in NCAA Tournament Bracketology

NCAA Basketball: West Virginia at Texas Tech

Texas Tech’s emotional victory over Texas on Tuesday helped move the Red Raiders back to a No. 3 seed in an ESPN Bracketology piece released on Friday.

Joe Lunardi’s latest 68-team field has seven Big 12 teams solidly in the field, while West Virginia dropped a little further back on the tournament’s bubble.

The Red Raiders beat the Longhorns, 77-64, in a game that market former Texas Tech head coach Chris Beard’s return to Lubbock 10 months after taking the Texas job. With that win, the Red Raiders were one of the few Big 12 teams to make some movement in the bracket. If the Tournament started today the Red Raiders would face Oakland in the first round.

On Saturday, Texas Tech is at West Virginia, and the Mountaineers are struggling with a five-game losing streak. West Virginia nearly stole a win at Baylor on Monday night. Lunardi still has the Mountaineers on the bubble, but after being the first team out of the tournament on Tuesday, they’ve now dropped to the fourth team out of the tournament.

Other takeaways:

Moving up: Texas Tech was the only Big 12 team to move up a seed from Tuesday’s bracketology.

Moving down: Kansas fell another spot in Friday’s bracketology, despite its win Tuesday over Iowa State. The Jayhawks are now a No. 3 seed. Kansas was a No. 1 seed last Friday before its loss to Kentucky.

Holding steady: TCU remained a No. 8 seed and Oklahoma remained a No. 9 seed, even though TCU beating Oklahoma head-to-head earlier this week. Texas held steady at a No. 6 seed and Iowa State at a No. 7 seed, despite losses. Baylor remained a No. 1 seed.
