Bob Bowlsby ‘Disappointed’ College Football Playoff Won’t Expand Sooner

NCAA Basketball: Big 12 Basketball Media Day

Big 12 Commissioner Bob Bowlsby has been outspoken in the past about his frustration with the College Football Playoff expansion process that has now come to a screeching halt.

“Have you seen the movie ‘Groundhog Day’?” Bowlsby asked back in January in response to how conversations were going concerning the 12-team playoff format that is now on the back burner. It’s clear that nobody has been willing to budge in the process, consequentially sending the idea, and the money, to a somewhat distant future.

Now, with the announcement that it will officially be 2026 before we have any kind of expansion, Commissioner Bowlsby is frustrated, yet again.

The proverbial “can-kicking” has been the focus of frustration for nearly everyone involved, but a difference in opinions about automatic qualifiers, scheduling issues, and looming television contracts is a hill that decision-makers are willing to die on.

Oklahoma and Texas moving to the SEC undoubtedly aided in the killing of the 12-team proposal for the time being and it will be interesting to see how expansion being dead in the water will affect the timeline of the bluebloods making their trek into uncharted territory. It was once thought they would be out of the Big 12, and out of Bowlby’s hair, by the 2022 season but that seems highly unlikely now it could be 2025 before the Sooners and Longhorns head out.
