College baseball is back folks and what a weekend of action it was around the country. There were plenty of non-conference matchups to be excited about including a big tournament in Arlington where three Big 12 teams faced teams from the SEC, Big Ten and the Pac-12.
While several teams were busy in a tournament, others were locked into a three-game series. D1Baseball had four Big 12 teams in their top 25 before the season started and after the first weekend of baseball, that number stays the same however we do have some movement in the rankings.
The Texas Longhorns came into the season as the favorites to win it all and nothing this weekend changed that thought because they absolutely crushed the Rice Owls. The Longhorns started their season off with a three-game set against Rice and there was never any doubt on who the better team was at any moment. After shutting out the Owls on Friday with a 7-0 win, Texas followed it up with an easy 15-1 victory on Saturday where shortstop Trey Faltine had four RBI’s. Texas would finish the clean sweep on Sunday with another easy beatdown with a 14-2 win. I know Rice isn’t the same program from years ago, but the Longhorns looked great on opening weekend.
#4 Oklahoma State
How about the Oklahoma State Cowboys? They had the toughest test out of any Big 12 team this past weekend and they showed up in a big way up in Nashville against a top five team. After dropping the first game on Friday, the Cowboys responded with two straight victories against Vanderbilt to take the series and climb up in the rankings. Miami transfer Victor Mederos pitched excellent on Saturday and on Sunday, first baseman Griffin Doersching had a big game with a team high three RBI’s. I also must give credit to pitcher Trevor Martin who helped seal the win on Sunday late in the game.
The Horned Frogs started their 2022 season off in Scottsdale, Arizona in the MLB4 tournament. There were some great games on opening day and TCU had one to remember because they had some late game heroics on Friday night against San Diego State. The Frogs were down 4-3 going into the ninth inning and thanks to Brayden Taylor and David Bishop, TCU was able to take the lead and win the game. Unfortunately, they didn’t have the same luck against Cal on Saturday, but they did end their weekend with an easy 10-0 over Houston on Sunday.
#20 Texas Tech
Much like TCU, Texas Tech started their season off in a tournament, but they were in Arlington for the 2022 State Farm College Baseball Showdown. The Red Raiders had a big win on opening day thanks to the late game heroics of Owen Washburn. However, they couldn’t find that same magic on Saturday against Auburn as the offense never got going in their 2-1 loss. The big test for Tech was supposed to be against Arizona, but unfortunately the Red Raiders didn’t have their best game as they fell flat in a 13-2 blowout.
