Three Big 12 teams are headed for the NIT after the season, according to the latest NIT Bracketology put together by DRatings.com.
The site is one of the few that does a bracketology for both the NCAA Tournament and the NIT. After DRatings.com completes its 68-team NCAA Field, it puts together a 32-team NIT field.
In this case, three Big 12 teams — Oklahoma, West Virginia and Kansas State — would make the NIT field, as of the site’s latest update.
Oklahoma would be the highest-rated Big 12 seed as of now, coming in at a No. 3 seed. West Virginia would be a No. 4 seed and Kansas State would be a No. 7 seed.
For most of the season, ESPN has had seven, or sometimes eight, Big 12 teams in the NCAA Tournament field. But on Monday, before his next 68-team bracket reveal on Tuesday, ESPN’s Joe Lunardi teased that only six Big 12 teams would be in his next 68-team field, seemingly backing up the idea that three Big 12 teams could make the NIT.
Lunardi had Oklahoma among the ‘First Four Out’ of the NCAA Tournament, with Kansas State as one of the ‘Next Four Out.’ West Virginia isn’t on the bubble.
Two weeks remain in the Big 12 regular season, and some big games remain for Oklahoma, Kansas State and West Virginia. Kansas State travels to Kansas on Tuesday, giving the Wildcats an opportunity to upset the Jayhawks and claim a Quad 1 win that could help their tournament chances. Kansas head coach Bill Self recently said that the Wildcats are worthy of consideration.
