Baylor Ends Regular Season Atop Big 12 Men’s Basketball Power Rankings

NCAA Basketball: Texas at Baylor

The Baylor Bears remained No. 1 in the Heartland College Sports Big 12 men’s basketball power rankings after Week 17 of the 2021-22 season.

These are our final power rankings of the season.

1. BAYLOR (26-5, 14-4 in Big 12) (Last Week: 1)

The Bears swept the week and ride a five-game winning streak into the Big 12 Tournament. Despite the short rotation, the Bears are finding a way to win games.

2. KANSAS (25-6, 14-4) (Last Week: 2)

The Jayhawks, led by guard Ochai Agbaji, won their last two games of the season but went 2-1 for the week after splitting with TCU. Beating Texas at home on Saturday was a nice way to build momentum going into Kansas City.

3. TEXAS TECH (23-8, 12-6) (Last Week: 3)

Head coach Mark Adams and the Red Raiders went 1-1 last week, but given what happened below them, there was no reason to drop them from this spot. They head into the Big 12 Tournament as the No. 3 seed and have every opportunity to win the tournament.

4. TEXAS (21-10, 10-8) (Last Week: 4)

Texas had the hardest road of the week, in terms of quality of opponent. The Longhorns lost both games to Baylor and to Kansas and will be the No. 4 seed in Kansas City. This is not a good look heading into the Big 12 Tournament.

5. OKLAHOMA (17-14, 7-11) (Last Week: 7)

The Sooners have found a way to win their last three games to at least get back into the NCAA Tournament bubble conversation heading into the Big 12 Tournament. The matchup with Baylor isn’t great, but what if the Sooners could upset Baylor in Kansas City? Might that get them into March Madness?

6. OKLAHOMA STATE (15-15, 8-10) (Last Week: 8)

It’s a shame the Cowboys aren’t heading to Kansas City, because they would have some great momentum after victories over Iowa State and Texas Tech last week. Even with the postseason ban, the Cowboys managed a .500 overall record.

7. TCU (19-11, 8-10 in Big 12) (Last Week: 6)

The Horned Frogs should have gotten a slight boost for the week with the victory over Kansas at home. But, after that, TCU lost their last two games (to Kansas and to West Virginia). But TCU has some momentum as they head to the Big 12 Tournament.

8. IOWA STATE (20-11, 7-11) (Last Week: 5)

The Cyclones ended up the bad end of two losses last week. It’s one thing to lose to Baylor on the road in the finale. But scoring just 36 points in a home loss to Oklahoma State? The Cyclones do have some offensive issues outside of Izaiah Brockington, and those were apparent again against the Cowboys.

9. WEST VIRGINIA (15-16, 4-14) (Last Week: 10)

What gets the Mountaineers out of the cellar? A season-ending victory over TCU in Morgantown. What if the Mountaineers can win a couple in Kansas City? NIT, perhaps?

10. KANSAS STATE (14-16, 6-12) (Last Week: 9)

Remember when K-State was a borderline NCAA Tournament bubble team? Those were good times. Now the Wildcats have lost five straight and just about everyone is expecting head coach Bruce Weber to lose his job after three straight losing seasons.
