Bob Huggins Explains Scenario in Which Kansas Should Fire Bill Self

NCAA Basketball: West Virginia at Texas Tech

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Bob Huggins would like you to know that if Kansas doesn’t win the national title this season Jayhawks head coach Bill Self should be fired.

I mean, Huggins was in a kidding mood after his Mountaineers defeated Kansas State, 73-67, in the first round of the Big 12 Tournament on Wednesday.

He only got a few minutes to enjoy West Virginia’s second win in a row before someone asked him to preview the Mountaineers’ game with Kansas at 2 p.m. on Thursday.

Here’s the video:

“Can I just think about this one for a while?” Huggins said.

Then he asked the reporters assembled to make sure they wrote the following down.

“Actually, I would like to say — make sure you write this — I think Bill ought to win the national championship,” Huggins said. “I think if he doesn’t they probably ought to fire him.”

It will be a tall order for the No. 9-seeded Mountaineers to beat the No. 1-seeded Jayhawks, even if Kansas forward David McCormack doesn’t play. Plus, Huggins and the Jayhawks didn’t play particularly well in either meeting this season.

“I don’t remember what happened at home,” Huggins said. “Seems like a long time ago.”

What happened at home was a 71-59 loss to Kansas. But, Huggins and Self are good friends. When Huggins had his annual charity fish fry the day before the Kansas game in Morgantown, Huggins coaxed Self to the party. Plus, anytime the Mountaineers beat the Jayhawks, Huggins gets a $25,000 bonus to donate to his the cancer hospital charity he created in his mother’s name.

West Virginia isn’t exactly intimidated by Kansas historically, either. The Mountaineers have beaten the Jayhawks six times under Huggins. Back in 2019, when West Virginia was the No. 10 seed, the Mountaineers reached the semifinals before losing to Kansas. But the Mountaineers gave the Jayhawks a heckuva run.
