Former Baylor assistant Jerome Tang was hired as the successor to Bruce Weber this week and he has made his first hire as the new head coach for the Wildcats.
Texas basketball assistant coach Ulric Maligi is reportedly joining Tang’s staff as his first assistant. Maligi spent one season as a Texas assistant under Chris Beard and helped the Longhorns to a 21-10 overall record and a 10-8 record in the Big 12.
After earning a six-seed in the NCAA Tournament, Texas downed a red-hot Virginia Tech team that ran through the ACC Tournament but lost to Purdue in the Round of 32 on Sunday night.
Maligi had an impact on the recruiting trail as well, helping Texas land a top-10 recruiting class for 2022 in the nation and the second overall class in the Big 12.
His one-year stint at Texas wasn’t Maligi’s only experience under Chris Beard, as he also spent two seasons at Texas Tech, where he coached All-Big 12 players in Jahmi’us Ramsey and Davide Moretti.
This is an excellent hire for Tang and should help him get things heading in the right direction as the Wildcats start to work towards the 2022-23 season.
