It appears that one of the most accomplished players in Iowa State basketball history isn’t quite done leaving her mark in Ames, as senior Ashley Joens has announced that she will return in 2022-23.
The all-time leading scorer in Iowa State history will be back for her fifth season with the Cyclones, contrary to the belief that she would enter the WNBA Draft after the Cyclones wrapped up one of the best seasons in school history.
Her return is huge for Iowa State next season, as she joins fellow All-Big 12 players Emily Ryan and Lexi Donarksi as key returners for a team with now sky-high expectations. Ryan finished 2021-22 as one of the top point guards in the nation, while Donarski earned the title of Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year.
Joens was named one of five finalists for the Cheryl Miller Small Forward of the Year Award after her amazing season. She won the award in 2021, and hopes to be the first to win it in back-to-back seasons.
Joens also earned a selection to the Heartland College Sports All-Big 12 First Team after she helped the Cyclones to a Top 10 national ranking this season. She led the team with 20.3 points and 9.5 rebounds per game, shot a career-best 37.6% from the 3-point line and a career-best 2.2 assists per game.
