We are in the seventh full weekend of the season as all nine Big 12 teams (sorry Iowa State) are back in action on the diamond this weekend. There are several big-time matchups around the conference and here is what happened in the Big 12 on Sunday.
Kansas State: 7 #6 Oklahoma State: 2
Kansas State finally got their first conference win of the season, and it was a big one. Connor McCullough was solid on the mound while the bats of Kansas State were great. This game was tied at two going into the seventh inning and that is where this game was won. Cole Johnson had a clutch hit before Nick Goodwin hit a two-run blast to give the Wildcats a three-run lead. Kansas State would add two more insurance runs in the eighth inning with two more homers from Orlando Salinas and Justin Mitchell to win the game. While the Wildcats did manage to take the final game of the series, the Cowboys were able to take the first two games.
Kansas: 8 #7 Texas Tech: 5
I was a little shocked to see Texas Tech drop this game on Sunday. Starting pitcher Mason Molina really struggled as Kansas got the best of him. But I will give a tip of the cap to Kansas pitcher Ryan Vanderhei who did a nice job against a great lineup as he struck out nine batters. Despite Texas Tech dropping the final game, they did manage to wrap up the series on Saturday.
#8 Texas: 12 Oklahoma: 8
We have had some crazy conference games this weekend but this one may have taken the cake. Oklahoma got off to a hot start as they got out to a 4-0 lead. Texas would finally get on the board when Murphy Stehly knocked in a run, but the Sooners would match that in the same inning. Then the Longhorn bats woke up in the seventh inning as Murphy Stehly and Dylan Campbell both hit three-run shots to tie the game at seven.
The Longhorns would break the tie in the final inning when Ivan Melendez brought in a run along with Austin Todd and Mitchell Daily. Oklahoma would add one final run, but the Longhorns were able to secure the win and complete the comeback to take the series. It was a wild game in Arlington that had plenty of drama, but the Texas got the job done.
West Virginia: 5 #12 TCU: 2
How about these West Virginia Mountaineers? After taking game one on Friday night, they just needed to win one of out the next two games to take the series and they got the job done on Sunday afternoon. West Virginia jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the fourth inning and never looked back in this game. TCU would add a couple of runs thanks to Bobby Goodloe, but the Frogs never really had a chance on Sunday. West Virginia Starting pitcher Zach Bravo played well and closer Trey Braithwaite once again was clutch. It was a HUGE win for this this West Virginia team, and I look forward to seeing what this team can do moving forward. As for TCU, it was an end to a disappointing week overall.
Baylor: 7 ETSU: 4
The Bears completed their three-game series with a sweep of ETSU. Next weekend Baylor will face West Virginia on the road as they look to win their first Big 12 series of the season.
