ESPN has released its preseason FPI rankings for the 2022 football season, and there were a few surprises but none bigger than Texas at No. 6.
The Longhorns, who finished 5-7 in 2021 including a loss to Kansas at home, are now among the FPI’s favorites to make it to the College Football Playoff in 2022 with a 21.0% chance to be among the four teams. Another surprising number is Texas’ estimated chances of winning the Big 12, which stands at 41.0% according to the Football Power Index.
Those numbers are sure to make Texas fans giddy to see how their Longhorns will fare in 2022, but let’s not get ahead of ourselves just yet. Let’s see how they stack up against Alabama in Week 2 before we start crowning Texas a national title contender.
The next team on the list is Oklahoma at No. 8. The Sooners are projected to have a 27% chance of winning the conference and a 12.6% chance of making the playoff. It will be interesting to see if the Sooners can overcome the amount of turnover they’ve suffered this offseason and get back to the Big 12 Championship in 2021.
Oklahoma State is listed at No. 13 in the FPI Top 25 with a 14.1% chance to win the Big 12 and a 4.3% chance to make the Playoff. Baylor, the final Big 12 team in the FPI Top 25, is listed at No. 19 and has an 8.7% chance of repeating as Big 12 Champions, and just a 1.2% chance of making the Playoff field.
