Iowa State’s Tyrese Hunter Enters NCAA Transfer Portal

One of Iowa State’s star players from a Sweet 16 squad won’t be returning in 2022-23, as Cyclones guard Tyrese Hunter has entered the NCAA Transfer Portal.
There were rumors swirling over the weekend that Hunter was headed to North Carolina, but Matt Belinson from Iowa State Daily said there was “no truth” to the claims.
Now, one has to wonder if Hunter is headed to Chapel Hill and if the rumors had merit after all. Regardless, one thing that is certain is this is going to hurt for T.J. Otzelberger and company. Hunter looked like a budding star in Big 12 and would’ve been a major part of the Cyclones’attack next season.
Averaging 11 points, 3.5 rebounds, and nearly five assists per game in his freshman year in Ames, Hunter was a major part of the Cyclones’ NCAA Tournament run. Against LSU, Hunter shot 63.6% from three and buried 7-11 from deep for 23 points. He also added five steals, three rebounds, and three assists in the 59-54 victory over the Bayou Bengals.
Hunter also broke Iowa State’s freshman record for assists (172) and steals (71), while also rankings fifth in steals and sixth in assists all-time among Big 12 freshmen.
His efforts earned him the title of 2021-22 Big 12 Freshman of the Year and, unfortunately, that will likely be his only year in the Big 12.
