Baylor safety Jalen Pitre has been selected with the 37th pick in the second round of the 2022 NFL Draft by the Houston Texans.
The 2021 Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year was ranked as the fifth-best safety on Mel Kiper’s Big Board and will fit well in new head coach Lovie Smith’s defensive scheme.
In 2021, Pitre earned Consensus All-American honors after logging 75 tackles (56 solo), seven passes defended, 3.5 sacks, two forced fumbles, three fumble recoveries, and two interceptions.
Under Dave Aranda, Pitre blossomed into one of the top safeties in football and was a do-it-all defender that played a large role in Baylor’s run to a Big 12 Championship in 2021.
The Texans are coming off a 4-13 season in 2021. The Texans selected LSU cornerback Derek Stingley Jr. with the No. 3 overall pick and Texas A&M offensive lineman Kenyon Green with the No. 15 overall pick in the first round.
Iowa State running back Breece Hall was the first Big 12 player in the draft, as he was selected one pick before Pitre by the New York Jets.
The first three selections of the second round were Houston defensive end Logan Hall at No. 33 to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, North Dakota State wide receiver Christian Watson at No. 34 to the Green Bay Packers — who traded up to get to that spot — and Auburn cornerback Roger McCreary at No. 35 to the Tennessee Titans, who also traded into that spot.
