Baylor wide receiver Tyquan Thornton went No. 50 overall to the New England Patriots in the second round of the 2022 NFL Draft on Friday.
Thornton was the third Big 12 player taken in the draft. Iowa State running back Breece Hall went No. 36 overall to the New York Jets, while Baylor safety Jalen Pitre went No. 37 overall to the Houston Texans.
There were no Big 12 players taken in the first round of the draft on Thursday night.
The 6-foot-3, 182-pound receiver helped the Bears win the Big 12 Championship last season. As a senior, Thornton started all 14 games and led Baylor with 62 receptions and 10 touchdown receptions. His 948 receiving yards was third in the Big 12 and his 15.3 yards per catch was fifth in the Big 12 last season. His 67.7 yards per game was sixth in the Big 12.
He left Baylor ranked No. 10 on Baylor’s all-time career receiving yards list at 2,242 yards, and his 19 career touchdown receptions was tied for eighth all-time at Baylor. His 143 career receptions was No. 14 in Baylor history.
Both the Associated Press and the Big 12 coaches named Thornton an All-Big 12 Second Team selection, and he also earned Big Board selection for the NFLPA Collegiate Bowl.
In 2020, Thornton started all six games he played in and finished with 16 receptions for 158 yards and a touchdown.
In 2019, he earned All-Big 12 honorable mention after he played in all 14 games, with 11 starts, catching 45 passes for 782 yards and five touchdowns.
