Three Big 12 Football Players Picked in Third Round of NFL Draft

The Big 12 Conference ended up with three players taken in the third round of the 2022 NFL Draft on Friday night.

The final four rounds of the draft are on Saturday.

The Minnesota Vikings took Oklahoma linebacker Brian Asamoah with the No. 66 overall pick in the third round. He opted out of the Sooners’ bowl game after earning All-Big 12 Second Team selection with 90 tackles and two forced fumbles.

 

Then, at No. 79 overall, the Los Angeles Chargers selected Baylor safety JT Woods. He started 14 games for Baylor as it won the Big 12 Championship for the first time. He led the Big 12 with six interceptions and had 57 tackles, fourth-most for Baylor. His 50 career games is fourth-most in Baylor history and he was voted All-Big 12 Honorable Mention defensive back by the league’s coaches.

Another Baylor defender went off the board at No. 89 overall as the Buffalo Bills selected linebacker Terrel Bernard. The All-Big 12 First Team selection was named the MVP of the Sugar Bowl after a 20-takle, two-sack game against Ole Miss. Bernard also went to the Senior Bowl.

The Big 12 had four players selected in the second round. Iowa State running back Breece Hall went No. 36 overall to the New York Jets, while Baylor safety Jalen Pitre went No. 37 overall to the Houston Texans. Baylor wide receiver Tyquan Thornton went No. 50 overall to the New England Patriots, while Oklahoma pass rusher Nik Bonitto went No. 64 to Denver, which had the final pick of the second round.

There were no Big 12 players taken in the first round of the draft on Thursday night.
