We are in the final weekend of conference play as all eight Big 12 teams are back in action on the diamond this weekend. There are several big-time matchups around the conference and here is what happened in the Big 12 on Thursday night.
#5 Texas Tech: 8
Neither starting pitcher had their best day but somehow the Sooners once again found themselves on top when it was all said and done. John Spikerman got the game started with a solo shot to give Oklahoma a 1-0 lead, but Tech would get things going with a pair of homers from Ty Coleman and Cole Stilwell. Then things got crazy as the Sooners went on a home run spree as Peyton Graham, Tanner Tredaway, Jimmy Crooks, and Brett Squires all went deep to give Oklahoma a 9-4 lead. Texas Tech would make a late push in the ninth inning scoring three runs, but it wasn’t enough to catch up to Oklahoma as the Sooners take game one.
#8 Oklahoma State: 11
It may have been only Thursday night, but this game was wilder than just your average weeknight baseball game. With help from Griffin Doersching and Caeden Trenkle, Oklahoma State had a huge 11-3 lead going into the seventh inning. Then Baylor woke up and had an inning many teams could only dream of as they scored a whopping ten runs in the final three innings. Jared McKenzie went yard but it was Antonio Valdez who won the game with his big two-run bomb to win the game.
West Virginia: 15
Kansas State: 4
The Mountaineers got off to a hot start this weekend by absolutely crushing Kansas State on Thursday night. J.J Wetherholt got things started with a two-run blast before McGwire Holbrook knocked in three runs to give West Virginia a 5-0 lead. Dayne Leonard would add a pair of runs for the Mountaineers to make it a 7-0 game before Kansas State finally got on the board thanks to Dominic Johnson. West Virginia would go on to have a huge eighth inning scoring six runs as Kansas State had no answer for their bats. It was a great start to the weekend for the Mountaineers who continue to fight for a playoff spot.
#22 Texas: 12
Kansas scored first but Texas had a big third inning scoring four runs with key hits from Silas Ardoin, Mitchell Daly, and Austin Todd. Then Daly would end up going yard in the fourth inning along with Ivan Melendez who hit a three-run bomb to give Texas a big lead. From that point, the Longhorns would never look back as they took game one with ease.
#24 TCU: 7
Santa Clara: 6
Despite not playing a conference game, TCU managed to clinch a Big 12 title last night due to the outcomes of the other games.
