With the regular season in the books, I thought I would do one final Big 12 baseball power ranking before the conference tournament starts this week.
No surprise here as the Big 12 regular season champions take the top spot. The Horned Frogs finished the regular season with a sweep over Santa Clara and despite not playing a conference game, they still were able to finish first in the conference.
Oklahoma may have not won the Big 12 but they were just a win away from clinching a share of the title this past weekend. They needed to sweep Texas Tech but that didn’t happen. However, they did manage to take the series which was huge. This team is red-hot as they have won five straight conference series.
While they did lose their last series to Oklahoma, this is still a very dangerous team. Everyone knows about their high-powered offense and no matter where they end up in the postseason, they will be a tough draw for anyone.
I am still not sure what to make of this team. They have been on a bit of a downward trend as of late. They got swept by Texas Tech at home before taking two out of three from Baylor. I know they have some good bats, but they have been inconsistent at times on the mound.
Much like Texas Tech, this team can hit the ball extremely well. I have never doubted their offense, but the pitching has been very up and down at times. One day Pete Hanson and Tristan Stevens look like aces and other teams they struggle to get through a few innings. This team will only go as far as their pitchers will let them.
Don’t pay too much attention their ranking here because West Virginia has shown flashes of excellence this season. Early on in Big 12 play, they looked like one of the best teams in the conference. However much like other teams on this list they have just fallen flat in some big moments.
The Wildcats have had their moments this season but unfortunately there haven’t been many. The were able to take a series against Texas which was the highlight of their season but just weren’t able to keep any sort of momentum going.
Not much to say about Baylor outside of the fact that they have been disappointing this season. Tyler Thomas was phenomenal on the mound though this year.
As you can see by their 4-20 Big 12 record, it is easy to see why Kansas comes in last in my power rankings.
