Lance Leipold Expects QB Jalon Daniels to be Week 1 Starter

Last season, Jalon Daniels took over as the starter for Lance Leipold and the Kansas Jayhawks against Texas in Week 11 last year and by this time you know what happened in that contest.

Daniels then went on to start in games against TCU and West Virginia to end the season and although they lost those games, it was by a combined nine points. Kansas was competitive with Daniels under center, so it has been heavily speculated that he would continue being the starter in Lawrence in 2022.

Up until Tuesday however, Lance Leipold hadn’t answered questions about who would start for KU in 2022, but it appears he finally answered the question during KU Media Day.

According to Michael Swaim of Kansas247, Leipold had this to say of the quarterbacks: “If you want to type ‘Lance Leipold expects Jalon Daniels to be the starter’ then go ahead and type it.”

In his three starts in 2021, Daniels went 65/92 (71%) for 706 yards, six touchdowns, three interceptions, adding 91 rushing yard and three rushing touchdowns. Those are good numbers for a first-time starter and something promising that Leipold could build around this offseason.

It was likely never a matter of if, but when Daniels would be named QB1 for the 2022 season and it appears that we now have our answer.
