Iowa State Names Four Team Captains for 2022 Football Season

The Iowa State Cyclones have named four captains ahead of the 2022 football season, according to a report from CycloneFanatic.

“Senior defensive back Anthony Johnson, senior center Trevor Downing, senior wide receiver Xavier Hutchinson and senior linebacker O’Rien Vance have been voted as the team’s leaders ahead of next Saturday’s season opener against Southeast Missouri State.”

Anthony Johnson has been one of the vocal leaders for the Cyclones this offseason and has received praise from the ISU coaching staff in doing so. In four seasons, Johnson has collected 183 tackles, 3 tackles for loss, three sacks, 24 passes defended and forced two fumbles.

Trevor Downing comes into 2022 as one of the most decorated offensive linemen in Cyclone history. In 2021, Downing was a first-team All-Big 12 selection and has made 26 starts for Iowa State in his Iowa State career.

Xavier Hutchinson is coming off of one of the best seasons in school history for a wide receiver, collecting a single season school record 83 receptions for 987 yards and five touchdowns. Hutchinson is a two-time All-Big 12 selection entering his senior year with 147 career receptions and 1,758 career receiving yards.

Lastly, O’Rien Vance has been a key cog in the Iowa State defense over the past couple of seasons, tallying 94 tackles, 22 tackles for loss and 10 sacks. Over the past four seasons, O’Rien has appeared in 45 games for the Cyclones and will be a calming presence in the middle of the defense in 2022.

Iowa State opens up the 2022 season against Southeast Missouri on Saturday, September 3 at 1:00 p.m. CT.
