Key Players

Texas Tech Red Raiders

QB Tyler Shough

When Tyler arrived in Lubbock from Oregon, he had plenty of buzz surrounding him. Some thought he could be at Texas Tech for just a year before bolting to the NFL. However, things didn’t go as planned as Tyler was injured early in the season last year and never came back. Now fully healthy, the starting quarterback job is his. Shough also has a new offensive coordinator in Zach Kittley who loves to throw the ball around. This should be a great game for us to see Tyler in action and just how comfortable he looks as the starting quarterback.

LB Tyree Wilson

Don’t expect miracles from this Texas Tech defense but there is no question that Tyree Wilson is the leader of it. Wilson led the team in sacks (7) and tackles for loss (13.5) last season. Under new defensive coordinator Tim DeRuyter, Wilson will transition to a more standup pass rusher coming off of the edge which should give him plenty of opportunities to rack up those sacks.

Murray State Racers

QB DJ Williams

As a true freshman last season, Williams threw for 1,020 yards and added 532 more yards on the ground. He managed to do that while splitting time with Preston Rice. DJ was named Ohio Valley Conference freshman of the year in 2021 and now appears to have full control of the starting job. He is definitely capable of making defenses pay with his legs as he can extend plays when needed.

LB Eric Sumata

The Racers led the Ohio Valley Conference in total defense last season, but they came into this year without a bunch of key players from that defense a year ago. However, Eric Sumata returns as he had a team high 77 tackles in 2021.

Key Storylines

Texas Tech Red Raiders

This is a must win game for Texas Tech for so many reasons. First off, the Red Raiders have a new head coach in Joey McGuire. It is going to be important for him to get that first win against an inferior opponent. It’s a fresh start for a new staff in Lubbock and I am excited to see just what is in store for this year’s Texas Tech team. By no means I am expecting a championship caliber team just yet, but it is crucial for this team to come out ready to play on Saturday.

Murray State Racers

I am not going to sugar coat it. Murray State is coming to Lubbock to get beat and collect their check. If this team can stay withing 20 points of Texas Tech, I would call that a win for the Racers. However, I don’t think that will happen, but this will be a huge test for them as the Ohio Valley Conference is up for grabs this season.

Prediction: Texas Tech 45, Murray State: 10

This game shouldn’t be close for any reason whatsoever. I expect Tyler Shough to throw for over 300 yards and be pulled by the time the third quarter ends to get some backups some reps. Defensively, the Red Raiders don’t have much to worry about. The key here will be taking care of the football and not letting Murray State hang around at all.
