Joey McGuire Updates QB Tyler Shough’s Status, Likely Out for Next Three Weeks

Texas Tech head coach Joey McGuire met with media on Monday after the Red Raiders’ 63-10 win over Murray State to open their 2022 season.

Despite the win, there are concerns around Raider Nation as Tyler Shough, who spent nearly a year rehabilitating a broken collar bone from last season, is now out with an undisclosed shoulder injury.

During his media availability today, McGuire gave an update on his starting quarterback’s status.

“He goes in Wednesday,” McGuire says of Shough’s upcoming medical evaluation. “It’s gonna be a deal where (we find out) how many weeks it will be. I don’t want to go any further than it’s the shoulder. I know he will not play against Houston or North Carolina State and probably will stretch into Texas. After that we’ll just have to see where he’s at. If it goes longer, the good thing is that we have a bye after the Oklahoma State game.

“So that pushes us into where we’ve got somewhere between three and six weeks to recover from his shoulder (injury).”

It’s not great news for the Red Raiders, but it at least sounds like Shough will have a chance to return at some point this season.

Sophomore Donovan Smith will step in as the starter in Shough’s absence, and that should be comforting to Raider Nation as he started four games for Texas Tech last season and was impressive in his time against Murray State.

Shough finished 6 of 10 for 154 yards and a touchdown prior to the injury before Smith came in and finished 14 of 16 for 221 yards with four touchdown passes.
