Tom Herman, Matt Rhule Listed as Candidates for Arizona State: CBS Sports

After dropping a game to Eastern Michigan over the weekend, Arizona State head coach Herm Edwards was relieved of his duties, with running backs coach Shaun Aguano taking over as the interim.
In his four-plus years in Tempe, Edwards went 26-20 and was 6-7 against ranked opponents, but amid an NCAA investigation and a slow start in 2022, Edwards got the hook and the Sun Devils are now on the hunt for their next head coach.
On Monday, CBS Sports’ Dennis Dodd released a list of potential candidates for the job, and among other names is CBS Sports analyst and former Texas head coach Tom Herman.
Here is what Dodd had to say about Herman and his candidacy.
“Herman has been away too long,” Dodd writes. “OK, it’s been less than two years since leaving Texas, but he still has a lot to give to the college game as a play-calling head coach. Remember when Herman was the hottest thing going at Ohio State and Houston? There’s still a lot of that energy left.”
Dodd has Herman listed as No. 8 on ASU’s list, but there is another former Big 12 name on this list as well, and it is much higher. According to Dodd, Carolina Panthers’ head coach and former Baylor coach Matt Rhule should be priority 1A.
“(Matt Rhule is) the leader in the clubhouse if he’s interested,” said Dodd. “(ASU athletic director Ray) Anderson loves NFL guys (obviously). If Rhule leaves the Panthers and isn’t snatched up by Nebraska, it shouldn’t be a tough decision for Arizona State. Dave Aranda at Baylor is still using players Rhule left behind who helped him win the Big 12 last season. The consummate program builder would be at home in the desert.”
If ASU can land either of these guys, both known for their ability to build programs, they will likely be in a good spot going foward.
