Texas Tech’s Fardaws Aimaq Suffers Foot Injury

NCAA Basketball: Gonzaga at Texas Tech

The Texas Tech Red Raiders will be without prized transfer center Fardaws Aimaq for several months due to an injury suffered in a recent practice.

College Hoops Today’s Jon Rothstein reported the injury as a broken foot. The Red Raiders did release a short statement to the local media about the injury, which the Lubbock Avalanche-Journal’s Carlos Silva Jr. relayed on Twitter.

Texas Tech senior Fardaws Aimaq suffered a foot injury during a workout earlier this week. He is expected to make a full recovery and return for the season. There is no timetable on how long he will be out of practice.

The news came the same day that coach Mark Adams had a press conference to talk about the team as the get closer to the traditional start of workouts leading up to the start of the regular season.

He didn’t address the injury, but he did address how he hoped to use Aimaq and Daniel Batcho, a holdover forward who like Aimaq is 6-foot-11.

“It makes our team unique with two 7-footers,” Adams said. “Fardaws is a guy who may have more skill than any big guy who has been here overall. He can shoot outside and inside. You can always feel his presence when he’s on the court.”

Aimaq was one of the most sought-after players on the transfer market after he chose to leave Utah Valley for his senior year.

Last season he averaged 18.9 points and 13.8 rebounds as he earned All-Western Athletic Conference First-Team honors. He was the WAC’s 2021 Player of the Year and the WAC’s Defensive Player of the Year in 2021 and 2022.

Through three seasons and 83 games played, Aimaq has 1,056 points, 918 rebounds and 99 blocks.

He led the nation with 15.0 rebounds per game in the 2020-21 season, becoming the first player to average over 15.0 rebounds in a season in more 40 years
