Kansas Jayhawks

Sports Illustrated Projects Kansas vs. Alabama in Sugar Bowl

NCAA Football: Texas at Kansas

Something about this just feels surreal, and I’m not sure how this is right, but the Kansas Jayhawks are being projected to play the Alabama Crimson Tide this postseason. In football.

That’s right. In its most recent weekly bowl projections, Sport Illustrated put Kansas as the Big 12 representative for the Allstate Sugar Bowl, where it would face Alabama on New Year’s Eve.

In the projected College Football Playoff, Oklahoma State makes the field of four, likely meaning that SI sees Oklahoma State beating Kansas in the Big 12 Championship, sending the Cowboys to the playoff and Kansas, as the second-best team in the conference, to the Sugar Bowl.

Can you imagine this scene: Lance Leipold and the No. 8 Kansas Jayhawks (11-2, 8-1 Big 12) enter the Caesar’s Superdome as the away team, ready to face off against the No. 5 Alabama Crimson Tide (11-2, 7-1 SEC). Leipold and Alabama head coach Nick Saban meet at mid-field and exchange pleasantries ahead of a high-scoring, entertaining Sugar Bowl.

What in the world is happening?

Before Kansas reaches New Orleans, it has a lot of football left to play, but with the Jayhawks at 4-0, it is certainly okay for fans to start anticipating a bowl trip somewhere this winter, maybe even to The Big Easy.
