Texas, Iowa State, Oklahoma and Baylor are all in the AP Top 25 Women’s Preseason Basketball poll, released on Tuesday.
Texas is the highest-ranked Big 12 team, coming in at No. 3. The Longhorns won the Big 12 Tournament last year and reached the Elite Eight of the NCAA Tournament. The Longhorns have several returning players from last year’s team, including guard Rori Harmon, who was the Big 12 Tournament’s Most Outstanding Player.
Iowa State is No. 8. The Cyclones reached the Sweet 16 last year and return their all-time leading scorer, guard/forward Ashley Joens, who is the two-time Cheryl Miller Small Forward of the Year award winner.
Oklahoma is No. 15, which is its highest preseason rating in nearly a decade. The Sooners lost in the second round of the NCAA Tournament, but return nearly their entire roster, including sharp-shooter Taylor Robertson, who is the Big 12’s all-time leading 3-point shooter, male or female.
Baylor is No. 18. The Bears were the Big 12 regular-season champion last year but lost to South Dakota in the second round of the NCAA Tournament. The Bears are without three stars from last year’s team, including Big 12 Player of the Year NaLyssa Smith. The Bears return guards Sarah Andrews and Ja’Mee Asberry, along with forward Caitlin Bickle.
Kansas, which reached the NCAA Tournament and won in the first round last season, received 25 votes. Kansas State, despite the knowledge that center Ayoka Lee is out for the season, received five votes.
