Future Big 12 Football, Basketball Schedules in Clearer Focus

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Big 12 commissioner Brett Yormark confirmed on Tuesday reports about the league’s football and basketball schedules for the 2023-24 and 2024-25 seasons at Big 12 women’s basketball media day.

Yormark said that the Big 12 football schedule will be released in early December, as it normally is. During a call on Tuesday morning, Yormark said the league agreed to a nine-game conference football schedule that would preserve rivalries and allow each team to play each other at least one during the next two years.

SI reported last week that the Big 12 would adopt a divisionless football schedule for the next two seasons, with nine games.  The format would protect rivalries and includes Texas and Oklahoma in both the 2023 and ’24 seasons.

The two-year format is set up for each team to play all others at least once. The Big 12’s best rivalries are expected to be played both in 2023 and 2024. Those matchups are not yet official, according to SI, but are likely to include Oklahoma-Texas, Oklahoma State-Oklahoma, Kansas-Kansas State, TCU-Baylor and West Virginia-Cincinnati, with the latter being a regional match up and ties back to the old Big East.

The Big 12 will be a 14-team lead for at least one season, starting in in the fall of 2023. BYU, Cincinnati, UCF, and Houston will join the conference and Texas and Oklahoma are set to remain until 2025, though certainly a deal could be struck earlier. However, the SEC has released its 2023 football schedule and the Longhorns and Sooners were not on it, a solid indication that a deal won’t get the two out of the league until at least after the 2023-24 season.

Yormark said that Oklahoma and Texas have been nothing but committed to remaining in the league through the current commitment, which is through 2024-25.

Two reports last week pointed toward Texas and Oklahoma going the distance in their contractual commitment to the league. First, College Hoops Today’s Jon Rothstein reported the Big 12 would continue with an 18-game league schedule. In addition, there are certain teams guaranteed to play each other twice in 2023-24 and 2024-25:

Kansas-Kansas State

Oklahoma-Oklahoma State

Texas-Texas Tech

Baylor-TCU

Cincinnati-West Virginia

Houston-UCF

Iowa State-BYU

Yormark said the basketball matchups for 2023-24 could be released in December, as well.
